Filipino Poets and Writers Readings & WorkShop 2006

Pagdiriwang Festival: Saturday, June 10, noon, Seattle Center

On Saturday, June 10th beginning at noon at Seattle Center's Center House, the Pagdiriwang Festival will host a colloquium titled Words Expressed: Filipino Pinoy & Ameripino Writers and Poets. Filipino America Poets and Writers will read their works. A panel will follow during which there will be a discussion of works, influences and the tradition of poetry and writing in the Filipino community. The colloquium will provide a sampling of Filipino works in America from a variety of perspectives. The audience will have an opportunity to explore their traditions with them. /p>

Many of the Filipino poets and writers reside in the Pacific Northwest. Participating poets and writers include:

  • Oliver de la Paz, professor from Western Washington University, whose book of poems Names Above Houses won the national Crab Orchard Award for Series Poetry.
  • Geronimo Tagatac, an Oregon Literary Fellow and a Fishtrap Fellow with published collection of short fiction, The Weight of the Sun by Portland State University's Ooligan Press.
  • Peter Bacho, professor at University of Washington Tacoma and Evergreen State College, author of several novels including Dark Blue Suit, Cebu and Nelson's Run.
  • R. Romea Luminarias, a member of PoetsWest and a writing fellow at several national writers workshops. His poems have been included in anthologies such as the Caracoa and Versus: Philippine Protest Poetry, 1972 -1986.
  • Oscar Penaranda, formerly of Vancouver and now teaching in San Francisco, author of Seasons by the Bay and Full Deck (Jokers Playing), a book of poetry.
  • Other local Filipino poets and writers include Tim Cordova, Robert Francis Flor, Toni Bajado, Maria Batayola, Lonnie Reyes and Angela Dy.

There will be a Merienda lasting about 30 minutes after which poets and authors will host discussion tables where the public can meet them, explore their works, purchase books and get autographs.
